Description

The grotto, located about 10 meters south-west of the walled garden at Highnam Court, dates from the mid-19th century and was designed by Pulham for T. Gambier-Parry. It is constructed from Pulhamite, a form of artificial stone, with a rendered finish on brickwork. The structure features a large, rough heap of 'boulders' that rises from the stream and is partly overgrown on top. There is a rough opening at the front with a 'stone' lintel above it, and an irregular flight of steps on the left leads up to higher ground behind. An irregular gap on the right side serves as a 'window' for a view downstream. Inside, the grotto contains a semi-circular room with irregular 'stones' serving as benches around the sides, and a concrete roof overhead. This grotto is part of a garden designed by Pulham, which is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of his work. It forms a group with a cave, another grotto, and the walled garden.
