Description
Mythe Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford, was built between 1823 and 1826. The bridge is made of cast iron with stone abutments and features a single segmental arch that spans 52 meters. This arch rests on six ribs that include small X-bracing, which supports the diagonal crossed bracing leading to the spandrels beneath the roadway and balustrade. Each abutment has six tunnel vaults with pointed arches, stone quoins, and attached colonnettes.
The bridge was constructed with main iron castings by William Hazeldine, a notable ironmaster from Shrewsbury. It is depicted on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map from 1884, which shows toll houses at both ends. While the bridge's form has remained unchanged on historic maps, it underwent an alteration in 1923 when the decking was reinforced with a concrete slab.
Mythe Bridge is listed at Grade II* due to its technological significance as one of the early iron bridges with a 52-meter span and its engineering importance as a notable work by Thomas Telford.
