Description
The turnpike shelter at the east end of Mythe Bridge, built in 1826, is likely from the workshop of Thomas Telford. This small polygonal structure is located on the downstream side of the bridge, directly opposite the Toll House. It is constructed of sandstone with a slate roof and extends down to a lower bank level beyond the roadway. At the time of the survey in July 1991, the area was heavily overgrown. The section above road level features ashlar stonework, while the lower part is made of coursed lias. The shelter has a central panelled door set within a four-centred arch, flanked by small sidelights on the splays. It has a hipped roof. The former toll gates are said to have been located at Bredon in Worcestershire.
