Description

This is a cave with a spring and rockery located about 45 meters south of the south-west corner of the walled garden at Highnam Court. It was created in the mid-19th century by the landscape designer James Pulham for T. Gambier-Parry. The cave is constructed from Pulhamite, a type of artificial stone, and features a large, irregular pile of boulders that forms a rockwork surround at the entrance. A stream flows from the cave, fed by a lake situated higher up in the garden.

A path at lake level winds around the rockwork to a platform above the cave, which is enclosed by another wall of rocks. In front of the cave, there is a small flat area on the edge of the lake, with a narrow, irregular space of water and a romantic arrangement of rocks and plants in the lake. This cave and rockery are an important part of the garden designed by Pulham, which is regarded as one of the best and largest surviving examples of his work.
