Description

Two Holder Monuments, located about 6 meters southeast of the south porch in the churchyard of the Church of St James, consist of two chest tombs. The southern tomb commemorates Samuel Holder (senior), who died in 1732, while the northern tomb is for Samuel Holder (junior), who died in 1746. Both tombs are made of limestone and feature flat tops with cyma-moulded plinths and cappings on bases with lyre ends. The tomb of Holder senior has a rectangular moulded side panel on the south and a cartouche on the north side, both inscribed, along with elaborately carved lyre ends that include cherubs' heads, an hourglass, and other decorative elements. The tomb of Holder junior is similar but arranged in reverse. At the time of the survey in December 1985, both tombs showed significant erosion at the east end.
