Description

The Hathaway Monument is a pedestal tomb located about 2 meters south of the west tower in the churchyard of the Church of St. James in Fretherne with Saul. It commemorates Elizabeth Hathaway and dates from 1775. The monument is made of sandstone and features a moulded cap with a flat acanthus relief and a rounded top, along with additional semi-circular side pieces at the base of the cap. It has a moulded plinth and capping, and it is set within a large surround that likely had railings in the past. The half-round ends of the tomb display a rope pattern astragal and applied wrapped oval panels. The sides are adorned with large oval panels featuring rope pattern moulding and floral carvings in the spandrels. At the time of the survey in December 1985, the monument was noted to be very badly eroded at the ends and on the north side.
