Description
Somerlea is a small house located in Eastington, originally built as two units and formerly several cottages. It is attached on the north side to a later house. The core of the building dates back to the late 16th century, while the addition on the left (west) is likely from the early to mid-18th century. The core features square panel timber-framing with brick infill and has a concrete tile roof. The addition is constructed of brick with a double Roman tile roof and includes a large external brick stack on the south side of both sections, with rebuilt flues.
The house is a single range, single storey with an attic. The core has a small 20th-century two-light window to the right of the stack, a 20th-century glazed porch over the door to the left, and a wide gabled dormer on the eaves above, which contains two small two-light casements. The later section has a raking two-light dormer on the eaves and two cambered head windows on the ground floor. The right-hand return features later brick facing. Inside, the main room in the core has a compartmented chamfered beam ceiling with curved brackets supporting the central beam, and a large timber bressumer fireplace.
