Description
The Oaklands Farmhouse is a building that dates from the 1730s to 1740s, featuring a remodelling of an earlier house with a mill attached to the south. It stands two and a half storeys high, constructed of ashlar stone on a chamfered plinth, with a plat band. The roof is modern and tiled, featuring three dormers: two outer gabled and one central segmental. The building has five windows with raised surrounds and glazing bar sashes. The central entrance has a doorcase with a six-panelled door and a segmental fanlight, complete with a keystone and carved spandrels.
The house is designed in a double pile format, and the rear ridge is topped with an ashlar chimney that has moulded capping. Inside, the farmhouse boasts a very good interior, including a panelled hall with fluted Doric pilasters and triglyph caps, as well as panelled doors that have contemporary paintings above the doorcases. The stairwell arch and entrance door arch feature panelled soffits. The south room contains a shell niche cupboard and a four-light window with chamfered mullions and the trace of a drip on the west wall. The north room is also panelled and retains its shutters and fluted Doric doorcase. The original staircase is notable for its twisted barley sugar balusters set in an oak cut string, along with decorative inlays and a panelled dado.
