Description

Nowell House is a large detached house built around 1720, with early 19th century additions. It is constructed of rubble limestone, mostly roughcast rendered, with ashlar dressings and chimneys, topped with a stone slate roof. The house is two stories high with an attic and features two rear wings.

The east front has five windows, all of which are 18-pane sashes with keyed moulded architraves and bull-nosed sills. The keystones above the upper floor sashes extend over the moulded eaves coving. The central doorway has a plain beaded surround and a six-panel door. A timber pedimented Doric portico porch, with columns and matching pilasters, was added by Sir Guy Dawber. The building has plain alternating quoins and two gabled roof dormers with leaded casements. Gable end chimneys have moulded tops.

At the rear, there are two gabled wings, with the south wing featuring a tent roof over a single-storey canted bay window, and an 18-pane sash window above in a 19th century opening. The north side has two-light chamfered mullioned casements. The interior has not been inspected.
