Description
The Church of St Peter, built in 1854 by Francis Niblett, is a small Anglican church located in Fretherne with Saul. It is constructed of marlstone with ashlar dressings and features a decorative tile roof with coped verges and cross finials. The church is designed in a Romanesque Italianate style, comprising a nave with an apsidal chancel, a small south vestry, and a north porch that rises to a tower. The main part of the church has five bays, each with single round-headed lights, and shallow stepped buttresses between them. The tower includes small angle buttresses on the lower stage and a single offset on the upper stage, which has two tall louvred belfry lights and a sprocketed pyramidal roof with a corbel table. The porch features a plain round-headed moulded archway with a single slit lancet above it. A large two-light west window is adorned with chevron moulding.
Inside, the church has a five-bay nave supported by reverse arch-braced collar beam trusses, with a stencilled and painted ceiling and apse. All original fittings remain intact. The front wall includes four cylindrical stone gatepiers on the north side, with the inner two positioned opposite the north porch. These piers have plain moulded bases and capitals topped with conical caps. Between the piers are trefoil-headed tall railings set into a coped shallow ashlar wall, featuring urn-like finials approximately every 2-3 meters. The railings rise between the inner piers to form curved-headed double gates, with a total length of about 40 meters.
