Description
This is a group of five monuments, mainly for the Butcher family, located in the churchyard approximately 3 meters southwest of the tower of the Church of St Andrew. The monuments date from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century and are made of limestone with brass plates.
The group consists of four monolithic slabs on stepped bases, each featuring an oval brass plate, with one slab containing two plates. The inscriptions are dedicated to William and Sarah Butcher, who died in 1800 and 1790, created by Cook of Minchinhampton; Thomas and John Butcher, who died in 1824 and 1827, made by Freebury of Stroud; and the children of Samuel and Elizabeth Butcher, who died in 1873 and 1883, also by Freebury of Stroud.
One slab has two plates inscribed to Samuel Butcher, who died in 1854, by Freebury, and another plate for William Kimber Butcher, who died in 1796. Additionally, there is a rectangular pedestal tomb with recessed side and end panels, a cavetto top, and a moulded plinth, although the inscriptions on this tomb are illegible.
