Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at 21 Eastgate Street in Gloucester, is a bank building constructed in 1889 with 20th-century alterations. Designed by Charles R Gribble of London for the National Provincial Bank, it is built in the Northern Baroque style using ashlar stone.

The building is a large block with three storeys, an attic, and a cellar. Its symmetrical front features an Ionic colonnade on the ground floor, consisting of four wide bays with three-quarter columns set against narrow piers between rusticated piers at each end. These elements rest on moulded bases atop granite plinths and are topped with a crowning entablature. The doorway to the banking hall is located in the right-hand bay, accompanied by large plain glazed windows from the 20th century in each bay.

The upper floors are recessed between piers at either end, creating a balcony with a wrought-iron balustrade above the colonnade. The first floor showcases a large central canted bay with Ionic pilasters at the corners, featuring two French windows at the front of the bay and single French windows on the canted sides and in the single bays at either end. Above this bay is a pediment that contains a wreath enclosing the initials "NB" in the tympanum. The central attic dormer, flanked by volutes, has two sash windows framed by pilasters and supports a segmental pediment with a carved shell in the tympanum.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is believed to contain a section of Roman pavement. This building is a notable example of Gribble's work for the National Provincial Bank and contributes to a cohesive architectural group with the adjacent No.19.
