Description

No. 11 Northgate Street is a shop and former dwelling that was originally a merchant's house. It dates back to the 16th century but was refronted in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is stuccoed, along with stuccoed brick, and has slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. It has a central brick stack that has been reduced to below the roof ridges. The structure is a double-depth block with parallel pitched roofs and cross gables at the rear.

The exterior showcases a late 18th-century three-storey refronting of what was originally a two-storey house with an attic, and there is a cellar below. The late 20th-century shop front is present, while the upper floors consist of four bays topped with a cornice that has been renewed in the late 20th century, along with a parapet above. Each bay on the upper floors contains flush sash windows with glazing bars (3x4 panes) set in openings with moulded architraves and projecting sills. The front was originally recorded as having three bays with dormers.

On the rear elevation, only the first and attic floors are visible; small fixed windows appear to fit into the pattern of the timber framing, which is otherwise concealed by stucco. Notably, there is a grotesque head in relief at the base of the south gable, which may date back to the 16th century.

Inside, the first floor features chamfered bridging beams, and there is exposed timber wall framing in the room at the rear on the south side. In the attic, the inner slope of the original central bay of the front pitched roof retains chamfered principal rafters and a chamfered purlin.
