Description
This is a group of three chest tombs located approximately 1.5 meters southeast of the Church of St Swithun in Gloucester. The tombs consist of a lower, central chest designated as Tomb A, which is further to the east, and two higher chests closer to the church's chancel, designated as Tomb B (northern chest) and Tomb C (southern chest). All three tombs are made of dressed and carved stone slabs.
Tomb A dates from the mid-17th century and features carved laurel fronds at each end, with inscription panels in the center on each side and a projecting capping slab with a moulded edge. Tomb B is from the late 18th century and has a moulded base slab. The east end slab is carved with an escutcheon surrounded by acanthus in a recessed panel, while the west end slab depicts an open book and palm fronds. Each side has inscription panels framed with moulding, and it also has a projecting capping slab with a moulded edge. Tomb C, also from the late 18th century, is semi-octagonal at each end, featuring a moulded base slab. Each face of the semi-octagons has fielded panels, and in the center of each side, there are projecting panels for inscriptions within decorative moulded frames.
