Description
St Mary's Gate, adjoining No. 14 College Green in Gloucester, is a gatehouse that now serves as offices. It was built in the late 12th century and was refronted and heightened in the early 13th century for the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, acting as the Great Gate to the Outer Court of the monastery, which is now part of College Green. The structure underwent alterations in the 18th century and was restored in the late 19th century by F.S. Waller for the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral.
The building is constructed of ashlar and rubble with a tiled roof and features wrought-iron gates. The plan includes a gate passage leading from St Mary's Square into the north-west corner of College Green, covered by two bays of quadripartite vaulting, with a large chamber above the passage at first-floor level.
The exterior consists of two storeys with cross-gabled fronts facing both the street and the court. The outer front facing St Mary's Street has a large archway leading to the passage, with recessed orders on the jambs, which were formerly adorned with nook shafts. Above this archway, there is an arcade of four bays at first-floor level, with the two inner bays flanked by smaller bays. The inner bays frame windows with flat lintels, and in the gable, there is a recessed triangular panel containing the jambs and arches of a three-bay blank arcade, from which the shafts have been removed. The inner front above the archway to the passage was restored in the late 19th century and resembles the outer front. The interior has not been inspected. St Mary's Gate is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
