Description

The barn and stable at Holder's Farm date from the early 19th century, while the stable itself is from the late 17th century. The stable features brick-nogged timber framing, and the barn is built with Flemish-bond brickwork on a stone plinth, both topped with tiled roofs. The barn has five bays, and the stable is a single bay at one end.

On the facade that faces away from the house, there are double-boarded doors in the center, with a small door cut into the left half. Stone hinge blocks support a segmental brick-on-end arch above the doors. The side walls between the trusses are slightly recessed, creating panels that are about 140mm thick, with every third course featuring rows of missing bricks that serve as air vents, positioned above a low solid base. At the top of the left end, there is a two-light window, and circular owl-holes are present in the gables.

The right end features a lower lofted stable, with framing that is two panels high to the ground floor. There is a doorway against the barn on the left, with air vents in the panel above and a pitching-hole to the right. Inside the barn, there is a stone-paved threshing floor flanked by brick spur walls, and a loft has been added on the left side. The trusses on either side of the threshing floor include a tie-beam, collar, and angle struts, with one bay back king-post supported by two pairs of angle struts. The roof structure includes two pairs of purlins and long windbraces extending from the wallplate to the plank ridge cut rafters.
