Description
Dock Cottage is a cottage and storehouse dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of random pennant rubble, with some squared stone used for the quoins and dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof with ridge tiles. The building is a two-storey double depth range, with an 18th-century cottage on the right and a later store on the left, which was likely built in the early 19th century and converted in the mid-19th century. The entire structure has five bays, with the two on the right clearly being an older build, as indicated by a straight joint with quoins.
On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a 16-pane sash window, a paired door with a 6-pane sash window in a segmental head, a small casement window, a two-light casement window in a segmented head, a plank door in a flat head, and a modern casement window in an altered opening. The first floor features an 8-pane sash window and four two-light casement windows. Above the door, there is evidence of a former taking-in-door that has been bricked up, suggesting that the upper floor was once used for storage.
To the right, there is a lean-to wash house with a brick chimney, while a brick lateral stack is located to the left. The main ridge has a rendered stack, and there is another brick stack at the right gable. The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported that the 19th-century plan form survives. One room retains ceiling hooks, and the left-hand roof has an unusual construction featuring iron principal rafters that support timber purlins. Dock Cottage is noted as the best surviving building associated with the Bullo Pill bargedock and tramway.
