Description

This building, located about 1 metre north of Hill Cottage, is a former part of a house that has been converted into a garage and store. It likely dates from the 15th century, with some rebuilding occurring in the 17th and 18th centuries. The structure features brick nogged timber framing set on a stone plinth, with coursed, squared blue lias stone on the left return gable and a tiled roof.

The building consists of two bays and is one room deep. The side wall displays the end of a stone gable on the left, with timber framing that is two panels high. The stone has replaced the end post, and there are double boarded doors leading into the garage, with weatherboarding above and a two-light window. There is also a brick section with a boarded door.

On the right return, there is a full cruck truss that was originally open, featuring blocking pieces to lower purlins off the spurs, arch-braces to the collar, and curved struts above. An inserted floor beam has a heavy chamfer, and there is square-panel framing beneath to the right, with thin studs to the left and above. The upper floor includes a two-light 20th-century mullion and transom window.

Internally, there is a timber-framed cross wall to the right of centre, with a blocked original door towards the rear. Three beams span across to the cruck truss. The back of the truss and a short length of original purlins are blackened, while two pairs of clean purlins of different shapes and a plank ridge abut in the surviving structure. The truss is supported by principal rafters with curved feet and a collar. The end of the cruck house has been rebuilt, retaining one open truss to the hall, while the rest of the hall has been demolished.
