Description

The barn and cowhouse at Pound Farm, located approximately 20 meters north of the house, date from the mid-18th century with an early 19th-century extension. The structure features a stone plinth with the lower half of the walls made of Flemish-bond brickwork, while the upper half is weatherboarded timber-framing, topped with a tiled roof. The extension has a roughly squared stone ground floor and English garden-wall bond brickwork above, with a slate roof.

This building has a five-bay barn and a three-bay lofted cowhouse, along with a single-bay lofted extension, creating an 'I' plan layout. The facade facing the yard shows the barn on the right, with central double boarded doors leading to the threshing floor, each door divided into two halves and reaching up to the eaves. On either side of the doors are four slit air vents in the brick base, with weatherboarding above, though some of this is missing.

Internally, there are low walls on either side of the threshing floor, supported by long braces that rise to the tie beam and angle towards the center. The central area features collar, tie beam, and angle strut trusses, with king-post trusses on either side that have short braces connecting to the main posts. The roof structure includes two pairs of butt purlins and a plank ridge, with wall framing studs that do not have an intermediate rail.

To the left, the contemporary cowhouse has three boarded doors, with two close together, each missing the upper half of the 'stable' door. There is also a boarded door leading to the loft to the right of the central door. A cross wall separates the left two doors, but the loft itself has not been inspected. A lean-to brick extension at the front is not of special interest.

On the left side of the extension, there is a boarded door with a cambered rubbed brick arch and dentil eaves that align with the barn and cowhouse. The roof has a flatter pitch. The left return features steps leading up to a boarded door in the center of the gable, supported by a plain iron handrail on two supports and a cambered brick arch. Exposed timber is visible in the gable above, along with a small diamond-shaped air vent. This building forms a group with the house nearby.
