Description
The Jordan Memorial is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, 2 metres west of the porch of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and is made of sandstone. The tomb features a flat top with a moulded capping. At the east end, there is a cartouche displaying a coat of arms, while the west end has an inscription that is indecipherable. The long sides of the tomb are adorned with upturned semi-circular panels that contain inscriptions and carved foliage, which are surrounded by cherub heads. The ends of the tomb are fluted lyres. This memorial commemorates Anne Jordan, who died in 1691, and her elder sister, also named Anne Jordan, who died in 1708. It contains the earliest decipherable inscription in the churchyard, which reads: "And Also Anne, ye Wife of John Lib Lamb Gent/Daughr of John Jordan by Eliz his Wife was/Born March ye 16t 1695 & Buried Oct ye 25t 1708" and "Anne ye Daughr of John Jordan by Eliz/his Wife was Born/April ye 18t 1690 &/Buried ye 25t of May/Following". At the time of the survey on June 5, 1984, one corner of the top was missing.
