Description
The Smith monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 11 metres west of the centre window on the west wall of the nave at the Church of St. Lawrence. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of stone. The tomb features a swept pyramid top, a step, and a weathered lid with a moulded edge. Below the lid is a reeded frieze with paterae at the centre and round corner paterae at each corner. The sides of the tomb have raised oval shapes with a moulded edge and oval corner paterae. The base has a moulded top. The monument commemorates John Smith, who died in 1822, and his wife, who died earlier, with additional inscriptions from 1836 and 1857.
