Description
Newnham House is a large detached dwelling built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brick with a stone modillion parapet cornice and has a Welsh slate roof. The central block features a parallel range, with later wings positioned immediately on the road, creating a tripartite composition with scattered openings.
The main facade faces the river to the east and consists of three storeys with three windows. The windows are sashes without bars and are set under stepped voussoirs. The ground floor has deep openings that reach floor level, and there is a central six-panel door, four of which are glazed, along with a fanlight under a moulded arch.
A 19th-century verandah spans the full width of the house, supported by decorative wrought iron elements and featuring a dentil cornice and a swept lead roof. Inside, there is a 19th-century staircase with stick balusters and various contemporary panelled doors. This house is noted for being the setting of 'East Lynne' in Mrs. Henry Wood's novel.
