Description
The Limes is a 17th-century dwelling located on the north-west side of Lower High Street in Newnham. It features rough render and a concrete tile roof. The building has a gabled projection facing the street, which was likely originally part of a larger premises that has since been divided, as seen in the nearby 'White House'. The structure stands three storeys high and has a single window on each floor: a two-light casement in the gable, and sash windows with glazing bars on the ground and first floors. There are also two windows on the left return wall. A six-panel door is located to the left, framed by an architrave.
Inside, the building retains a substantial timber frame. There is a through passage to the left of the gable, and the main stack is situated in the wing at the back, which shows evidence of a curved interior wall that likely accommodated an original newel stair. The ground floor features heavy stopped chamfered beams, and there is a post with a carved haunch displaying the initials SW and the date 1667.
