Description
The four Pury monuments are located in the churchyard, between 1 and 3.5 meters east of the south-east corner of the nave at the Church of St. Lawrence. These chest tombs date from the late 17th century, possibly into the early 18th century, and are made of stone.
The north-west monument commemorates Thomas Pury, who died in 1688. It features a flat lid with a moulded edge and plain sides, along with an inset slate plaque on the west side that has lettering. The south end has a raised oval set in a sunk rectangle, displaying the Pury coat of arms on an inset stone. The eastern monument has a flat lid with a moulded edge, but the inscription has weathered away, leaving no details on the sides or south end, though the Pury coat of arms is visible on the north side.
The south-west monument also has a flat lid with a moulded edge and a sunk rectangle on the west face, framed by scrolls at the ends, with a plain margin outside from the returns of the end panels. The sunk rectangle is on the north side, with the Pury coat of arms on the south side. The fourth monument is set against the third, to the east, and has a flat lid with a moulded edge. Its ends are similar to the third monument, and the east side features a Latin inscription to Thomas Pury, though no date is legible. One of the monuments likely honors Thomas Pury, who built the church, and the family lived at The Grove in the same parish.
