Description

The building is a former barn attached to the rear of Woolstaplers House, likely dating from the 18th century. It has been altered over time, with some adaptations made by C R Ashbee in the early 1900s, and the roof structure was updated in 1984. The barn is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, with the north, west, and possibly the south sides originally open between ashlar piers that feature small offsets. It has a stone slate roof topped with a late 20th-century ashlar chimney.

The south end of the barn, which was unconverted at the time of inspection in June 1985, retains small-pane glazing in the central bay to the west and in the first floor of the right-hand bay, along with leaded lights in a partly bricked-in opening to the east. The north gable end has late 20th-century windows on the first floor and garret, with rough ashlar underbuilding supporting a girder over the ground floor. The interior of the barn features a modernized ground floor on the north end, which retains a chamfered beam. Examination of discarded timbers revealed that the original roof structure consisted of two rows of butt-purlins with slip tenons, a feature uncommon before the 18th century. The barn is now divided into two parts by a late 20th-century blockwork party wall. It is believed to be associated with the wool trade, although the current structure is not medieval, and the open sides suggest it was used for storing forage or implements.
