Description
EVENLODE sP 23 SW 2/108 Wells Folly II Detached house. Dated 1905 on chimney stack, house designed by Guy Dawber. Thinly bedded coursed limestone with pointing raked out, stone slate roof, brick stacks, ceramic ridge tiles. Compact Cotswold type plan with gabled 2-storey poch off-centre left and broad gabled cross wing at centre, service court continuous to right with large round-headed carriage entry with original decorative double plank doors under gable. Small circular turret at right-hand corner with slit windows and casements within stone surrounds with curved pointed heads. Facade: 2 storeys and attic, irregular fenestration all 2 or 5-light untreated oak-framed casements with leaded panes. Central, moulded, round-headed opening to porch with segmental oriel above bearing carved coat of arms with dragon at centre and latin inscription UT ROSA SIC VITA below. Kneelers to gable above decorated with carved dragons. Plank door with decorative studs in round-arched head within porch. Return left; twin 2-storey gables flanking recessed verandah with large external stack at rear. Service courtyard mainly as built including square ventilation turret with hanging stone slate around base and timber louvres above, pyramidal roof with weather vane. Decorative rainwater head at rear. All gutters supported by curved brackets. Interior apparently as built. (Small Country Houses of Today P.38 (1983) Edited by Lawrence Weaver).
