Description

Wells Folly is a detached house dated 1905, designed by architect Guy Dawber. It features thinly bedded coursed limestone with raked-out pointing, a stone slate roof, brick stacks, and ceramic ridge tiles. The house has a compact Cotswold type plan, with a gabled two-storey porch off-centre to the left and a broad gabled cross wing at the centre. To the right, there is a service court that includes a large round-headed carriage entry with original decorative double plank doors beneath a gable.

At the right-hand corner, there is a small circular turret with slit windows and casements set within stone surrounds that have curved pointed heads. The facade has two storeys and an attic, with irregular fenestration comprising all two or five-light untreated oak-framed casements with leaded panes. The central porch has a moulded, round-headed opening, with a segmental oriel above that displays a carved coat of arms featuring a dragon at the centre and a Latin inscription "UT ROSA SIC VITA" below. The gable above has kneelers decorated with carved dragons. The porch contains a plank door with decorative studs in a round-arched head.

On the left side, there are twin two-storey gables flanking a recessed verandah, which has a large external stack at the rear. The service courtyard retains much of its original structure, including a square ventilation turret with hanging stone slate around its base and timber louvres above, topped with a pyramidal roof and weather vane. The rear features a decorative rainwater head, and all gutters are supported by curved brackets. The interior appears to be as originally built.
