Description
The Slaughter Mill and Sluice Bridge, also known as the Post Office, is an early 19th-century building located in Lower Slaughter. It is constructed in two parts, featuring both red brick and coursed rubble with Cotswold stone roofs. The structure is two storeys high with attics and has three windows that include two and three light wood casements with elliptical heads. There is a plain door topped with a gabled hood, and the building has two single-storey wings.
Notable features include a tall red brick chimney with stone weathering on the south gable and a large iron breast shot wheel. The mill retains much of its original gearing and machinery, including the grinding gear. As the only large brick building in the area, it holds a significant place in the village's landscape and contributes to a well-loved picturesque view. The sluice bridge, located behind the wheel, is a simple ashlar construction that arches over the sluice in a hump-backed shape and lacks a parapet.
