Description
The Cross is a late medieval structure that was restored in 1878 to commemorate Stow's fresh-water supply. It features a tall chamfered shaft on a large plinth, with two steps and a wide base. The gabled head stone depicts the crucifixion on the south side, while the Abbot of Evesham, Robert de Jumieges, is shown receiving a charter from King William II that established Stow as a Market Town. On the west side is a figure of Robert Chester, a 15th-century local merchant and benefactor, and on the east side is Joseph Chamberlayne, the Lord of the Manor who funded the town's fresh-water supply. The structure is capped by a foliate cross and was formerly topped with a gas-lamp. A tablet on the plinth provides details about the restoration.
