Description
The Old Post Office is a detached house located in Kingscote, dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 20th century. Originally, it was constructed from rendered rubble stone and features flush quoins and a stone slate roof, with 20th-century brick end stacks. The building has an L-plan layout, with a gable end cross wing to the right, and consists of two storeys and an attic.
The right gable end, which was previously blind, now has scattered 20th-century windows. The main section on the left has three 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features two similar windows to the left and a large 20th-century raking stone porch to the right, which connects to the gable. The right-hand return has two likely 19th-century plain paired casements with timber lintels on each floor, along with two gabled dormers from the 20th century that replaced a former single hipped dormer. There is a large lean-to on the north side and a 20th-century garage to the west.
The interior reportedly contains a large fireplace from around 1800 in the ground floor room to the southwest, featuring fluting and an anthemion pattern on the lintel; however, the interior was not accessible during the survey in March 1986. Despite some alterations, the house retains many of its original period features and is situated prominently on a sharp corner in the village.
