Description

Brook House is a detached house built in the early 18th century, with a later wing to the west that forms an L shape. The building is constructed of mostly coursed rubble stone and has a Cotswold stone slate roof with six scattered stone stacks. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features a change of level in the west wing.

The entrance front has a large gable on the right that extends across half the width of the house. There are four windows, which are 12-pane sashes, although the furthest right window is blocked. A small gable window with nine panes is also present. To the far left, there is a pedimented doorcase with Doric pilasters on bases, leading to a leaded half-glazed four-panel door.

At the rear, the garden front is symmetrical and features five windows with plate glass sashes designed to resemble 12-pane windows, each with large stone lintels. The central doorcase is pedimented and has dentil decoration, flanked by Doric pilasters on bases. There are 20th-century glazed doors at this opening and at an adjoining opening on the right, which was formerly a window.

In the northeast corner, there is a small domestic wing beside Avening Brook. The west wing served as former domestic quarters on the ground floor at the rear. The south-facing elevation has four 12-pane sashes on the right and three small two-light stone mullions on the left, separated by a projecting stone stack on the far left. There is a doorway near the centre with a similar door to the main entrance, set under a simple wooden lintel. The house also features two small gabled dormers with decorative bargeboards.
