Description

Norman Cottage Chapel is a 12th-century village church that was altered during the medieval period and later converted into two cottages, which are now combined into one.

The exterior is divided into two parts, constructed of rubble with tiled roofs and coped verges to the east, above the former chancel arch. The left part is a single storey with an attic, featuring a gabled dormer that has a two-light mullion window with a drip, and a three-light similar window on the ground floor. The gabled return to the west is a later infilling. The right part is two storeys tall, made of coursed rubble, with two 19th-century windows that have segmental heads and a lean-to over the porch.

Inside, the space has been altered for use as cottages. The chancel, located in the right part, contains a large inserted fireplace with a wooden lintel, which has an upper lintel supported by former eaves corbels. The original layout is still recognizable, featuring a two-bay chancel and a shortened two-bay nave. The pointed chancel arch rests on slightly earlier-looking 12th-century imposts, and there is one scallop capital from a nook shaft that has been removed from its original position where stairs once were. The nave has two cruck trusses with later purlins and wind-braces, while the chancel features a possibly 15th-century arch-braced truss.

Several original features remain, including a small round-headed 12th-century window with a monolithic head.
