Description
This is a shop with living accommodation above, dating from around 1800 to 1820. It appears on the 1820 Post Office Map and has an early 20th-century shop front. The building is faced with stucco over brickwork, has a concealed roof, and includes wrought-iron window guards. It occupies an almost U-shaped plan, incorporating a rear wing.
The building is three storeys high with an attic and has six first-floor windows, arranged in a 2:1:3 pattern. Stucco detailing includes pilasters between the windows. A first-floor band rises into Corinthian pilasters that extend between windows on the first and second floors, as well as on the left return and angled corner. The facade features an architrave, frieze, and cornice, along with short, plain pilasters to the attic, topped by a crowning frieze, cornice and blocking course. The first floor has tall 6/6 sash windows within tooled architraves that incorporate a frieze and cornice; the window on the corner is curved in section. The second floor has similar 6/6 sash windows, with the corner window also curved. The attic has 3/3 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. The shop front has pilasters between the windows. A 6/6 sash window is located in the rear range.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process. Four window guards are visible on the first floor: one on the left return and three on the right. These feature a scrolled quatrefoil motif. The building stands on a corner site where High Street meets Clarence Street.
