Description
The Two Pigs Public House, formerly known as the Eight Bells Public House, is an inn with an attached stable range located on Church Street in Cheltenham. It was built between 1780 and 1820 in three stages, with some later alterations. The building features stucco over brick and a slate roof, with a mansard roof on the left side. The stable range is constructed of coursed limestone. The overall layout is L-shaped, consisting of an earlier north block and a central range that align with a later right-angle south range facing north and extending to the west, while the stable range extends further south and faces west towards the churchyard.
The exterior has two storeys plus an attic on the north range, which showcases angle quoins and a two-window front with 6/6-pane sashes, along with an 8-pane sash in the dormer of the mansard roof. The south range features a two-window front with a mix of 6/6 and 8/8-pane sashes, including an enlarged mid-20th century window on the ground floor next to a four-panel door with an overlight. The north-facing elevation of the right-angle range has similar fenestration and includes a canted bay, as well as another four-panel door at the gable end. The stable range, which extends further south, has two storeys and five first-floor windows that are now blocked.
Inside, the building has beams and boxed beams on the ceilings, along with a row of stick balusters and a mahogany handrail leading to the landing. Historically, this inn is one of the early establishments in Cheltenham and plays an important role in framing the view towards the Church of St Mary, while also being adjacent to a two-storey red brick workshop or warehouse located approximately 23 meters southeast of the east end of the church.
