Description

Fauconberg House, part of Cheltenham Ladies' College, is a villa built in 1847 by Samuel Onley for Dr. Charles Fowler. The building features stucco over brick with a concealed roof and gault brick stacks at the front and rear. It has iron railings and balconies. The villa stands three storeys high with a basement and attic, and has three first-floor windows. Fluted Ionic pilasters run through the ground and first floors, topped by a dentil entablature over the first floor. The second floor has panelled pilasters, while the ground floor windows are adorned with pediments on console brackets. The windows are mainly 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes, with 3/6 sashes on the second floor and 6/6 sashes in the basement. A central Ionic portico features coupled fluted columns and a dentil pediment, leading to a six-panel door with an overlight and side-lights. The right return has three first-floor windows with stucco details, including end Ionic pilasters. The interior retains original joinery and plasterwork, including panelled shutters on the windows. The left return has a ground-floor balcony with an ornate scroll motif. The attached railings on both sides feature alternate rods and fleurs-de-lys finials. Historically, the Bayshill Estate was developed by a joint stock company that purchased land from the Skillicorne family in 1837, which went bankrupt around 1845. Onley acquired much of the Bayshill property, including the Royal Old Wells, and it is suggested that other houses in Bayshill Road were built to his designs. A 20th-century range at the rear is not included in the listing.
