Description
14-17 The Parade consists of four adjoining estate village cottages designed in 1909 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Duke of Bedford. These cottages are part of the planned village centre of Milton Abbot. They are constructed from local stone rubble and feature a slate roof laid in diminishing courses, hipped at the ends. The eaves extend over stone corbelled courses and are interrupted by small hipped half-dormers. There are three short stone stacks along the ridge, with additional stone stacks at the ends and one on a gabled projection at the north end.
The cottages exhibit a vernacular revival style, with three cottages facing south and one facing north, forming an L shape. They are two storeys high, with an asymmetrical south elevation that has nine windows. The deep eaves create a picturesque appearance, with the fenestration arranged in a visually appealing manner. The front doors are regularly spaced and feature integral rectangular fanlights under horizontal canopies supported by timber brackets. The timber jambs of the doorways are stop-chamfered.
On the ground floor, there are three 4-light canted bay windows and three 3-light casement windows, each with two panes per light, set under flat stone arches. The first floor windows consist of small 3-light casements under the eaves and half-dormers, which have 2-light casements with two panes per light and hipped slate roofs. The east elevation displays similar window arrangements. The interior has not been inspected.
