Description
Nos 9 to 18 Duke Street is a row of shops built in 1860 as part of the Bedford estate, connecting to the Pannier Market and the adjoining Town Hall. The building is three storeys high, constructed from Hurdwick stone with yellow brick dressings, and features a slate roof. It has five gables, three of which have kneelers, and a total of 23 windows, most of which are paired sashes. The ground floor retains many original arched shopfronts that are divided by octagonal piers. There are also three 3-centred arched passageways leading to the market building. The rear elevation includes a penticed verandah supported by iron columns.
