Description

This is a farmhouse, likely dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, and possibly with earlier medieval origins. It was extended in the 18th or 19th century. The walls are a mix of rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof. There are three chimney stacks: one projecting stone rubble stack with a brick shaft at the right gable end, a brick axial stack, and a brick stack at the left gable end. The original layout was a three-room plan with a through or cross passage, with the lower end being to the left. The hall stack originally backed onto the passage. An extension in the 18th or 19th century slightly widened the house. The front has two storeys and an asymmetrical five-window facade. Most of the windows are 19th-century, 2-light casements with small panes. One 20th-century 3-light casement is on the ground floor to the left, and two 19th-century sash windows are to the right – the left-hand one possibly dating to the early 19th century. A late 19th-century panelled and glazed door sits to the left of centre, leading to the passage, and is sheltered by a 20th-century doorhood. Inside the hall, there's a richly moulded cross beam with hollow step stops and a small beam or joist running to the fireplace, which is now blocked. While the first floor and roof space were inaccessible during the survey, it is possible that original timber and thatch remain, along with other early features potentially concealed by later modifications.
