Description

Stone Farmhouse is a mid-19th century farmhouse associated with a planned farmstead. A newspaper cutting from 1855 refers to the house as newly built. The building features rendered stone rubble walls and a hipped slate roof. There are three rendered stacks at the left-hand end, one axial stack towards the right-hand end, and one axial stack offset from the ridge at the rear. The layout is a rectangular double depth plan with an entrance/stair hall to the left of center and principal rooms on either side. The right-hand end contains a dairy, with the kitchen and other service rooms at the rear.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front. The first floor has mid-19th century hornless 12-pane sashes, while the ground floor features late 20th century PVC French windows in the original openings. To the left of center, there is an original granite porch with pillars at the front and pilasters at the rear, which have moulded capitals and a moulded cornice above. The porch likely contains the original panelled door, although the top panels have been replaced with glass. The rear elevation remains largely unaltered, with four asymmetrically placed windows that are 19th century small-paned 2- and 3-light casements, and an original 6-panel door to the right of center.

Inside, the kitchen has an open fireplace with a roughly dressed square granite lintel and jambs. The staircase is surprisingly plain, featuring an open string, a wreathed handrail, and stick balusters that serve as newels. The right-hand principal room contains two original arched recesses with moulded pilasters that flank the chimney breast. The original chimneypieces have either been removed or the fireplaces blocked. This farmhouse is part of a planned mid-19th century farmstead located immediately to its rear.
