Description
The building at 59 West Street is a circa 1830 house built in a Neo-Classical style, characteristic of the Foulston type. It is a two-storey, three-window fronted structure. The exterior is stuccoed, with a granite plinth and steps leading to the entrance. Pilasters define the quoins and a central feature, incorporating rows of guttae. A stopped blocking course and cornice run along the top of the façade. The windows are sash windows, including a three-light window above the central doorway. The doorway has a recessed porch with square pilasters and a rectangular fanlight. Inside, the house features a good curved staircase and fluted columns within the hall. The site was previously occupied by a house known as 'Stone Posts', where John Peryn, the last Abbot of Tavistock, is believed to have lived after the Dissolution.
