Description

No. 84 (Midway) is a house that was likely once two cottages. The main structure may date back to the 18th century, but it was extensively rebuilt in the early 19th century and again, probably, in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble, rendered and colourwashed on the front, with remnants of colourwash on the left side. It features a slate roof that is hipped to the left, along with two hipped-roofed dormers that have two lights each and two large central brick chimneys.

The layout is symmetrical with a long central hallway and a depth of two rooms, which are heated by back-to-back lateral stacks. There are two front rooms and two back rooms. The exterior has two storeys and a basement, with three symmetrical windows on the main entrance front, featuring 16-pane double-hung sash windows. The central door opening contains a six-panelled door. The ground level slopes down to the left, creating a basement under the left half of the building. An elevated forecourt is supported by a rubble wall capped with slate slabs and features iron railings.

Inside, the left room on the ground floor has an early 19th-century fireplace with a reeded surround and roundels at the corners. The rear room on this side has a roughly-hewn unchamfered wooden bressumer. The right front room on the ground floor shows evidence of a blocked door opening that once connected to the adjoining cottage, No. 85.
