Description

Borough is a farmhouse that has been converted into a dwelling. It likely dates back to the late medieval period and has undergone several alterations. The walls were raised and new windows were added in the 19th century, and the building was extended in the early 20th century. The exterior features roughcast over rubble and cob, with a corrugated iron roof that was originally thatched. There are bargeboards and corrugated sheeting on the addition, along with a 19th-century rebuilt brick stack on the west gable end and a tall brick stack rising from the eaves to the left of the entrance.

The layout consists of a three-cell plan with a cross passage facing north, and a single-storey lean-to addition that contains a WC and scullery on the south front. The farmhouse is two storeys tall with a long frontage that is only lit by the north front end bay on the left, which has 3-light casements on both the ground and first floors. There is a small stairlight window to the right of the entrance, and a 2-light casement on the ground floor to the right, along with a four-panel door. The east gable end is unlit, and the west gable end was partly collapsed at the time of the survey in January 1988. The south front has three bays.

Inside, there is a late medieval shouldered wooden doorframe in a load-bearing wall to the left of the through passage. This room features exposed joists from the 19th or 20th century, and an open fireplace that projects into the room with remains of a bread oven to the west. A straight stair rises against the front wall, with a corridor adjoining it. There is a pantry on the south side with slate shelves and a load-bearing wall to the through passage, and a 1930s chimneypiece in the room at the west gable end. The roof space is not accessible but is believed to be of collar-beam construction. The original plan of the farmhouse is not fully understood without a more detailed survey.
