Description
Diddywell is a 16th-century house with alterations and additions, situated in Northam. Originally a rambling two-story structure, it is now plastered. The central part of the house features three windows and a ground-floor room with heavily moulded centre and wall beams, exhibiting rich carvings including stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The joists are now covered, but are believed to have also been enriched. The roof is covered with old, grouted slates, with part of the rear of the house slate-hung. A 16th or early 17th-century plaster frieze, originally present, has been removed. A portion of the open roof principal, including a cambered tie-beam, was visible in one first-floor room. The south wing, now divided off as a separate dwelling named Manor House Cottage, contains a wide stone fireplace with a restored stopped ovolo-moulded beam.
