Description
Black Torrington Bridge is a road bridge over the River Torridge. It likely has origins from the 17th century but was extensively rebuilt in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The bridge is constructed of slate rubble with concreted coping stones, featuring two arches. On the upstream side, the arches are rounded, and there is a refuge with a triangular cutwater below. In contrast, the downstream side has four-centred arches and a refuge but lacks a cutwater. The bridge was reported to be in decay in 1677. In the early 19th century, James Green described it as having two arches that support a roadway 3 metres wide.
