Description
South Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with additions from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features plastered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, supported by two brick gable-end stacks. The layout consists of a two-room plan with a small central unheated room, a passage running in front of it, and a staircase to the left. Each of the outer rooms has a gable-end fireplace. There is a 20th-century outshut behind the left-hand room and a lean-to from the 18th or 19th century against the left-hand end. The exterior is two storeys high, with a regular three-window front featuring 19th-century three-light casements. A central lean-to porch with a wood shingle roof leads to a 20th-century plank door. At the rear, there is an outshut behind the left-hand end with a stair projection adjoining it. The interior does not show any pre-19th-century features, which may be hidden, but the roof structure consists of rough straight principals from the 18th or 19th century. This house has seen little alteration since the 19th century and remains in an unspoilt condition.
