Description
Lovistone Barton is a farmhouse that has been divided into two units. It dates from the late 18th century, with a possible wing from the 17th century. The building features a combination of brick and rendered walls, topped with a gable-ended slate roof. There are five chimneys: one is a projecting rendered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the left gable end, while the others are brick, including one axial stack, one lateral stack on the front wing, and both a lateral and axial stack on the rear wing.
The layout includes a 19th-century front range with three rooms, where the right-hand room forms a small wing at the front. There is a narrow stair hall between the left-hand room, likely the kitchen, and the central room. The long rear wing, probably from the 17th century, consists of two rooms and has a 19th-century granary built at its end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front, where the right-hand end forms a small wing. The main range features original two-light wooden mullion and transomed windows with brick arches and projecting keystones above. To the left of the centre, there is a 19th-century plank door with a rectangular fanlight above. The short wing at the right-hand end has a three-light mullion and transomed window on the first floor, with an arched recess above. On the ground floor, there are two similar two-light windows separated only by a brick pier with a projecting keystone above. The long rear wing extends behind this end and includes a granary at its far end.
Inside, the central room of the front range has an early 18th-century fielded two-panel door and a Victorian staircase. The rear wing was inaccessible during the survey but is believed to contain old ceiling beams. Notably, Lovistone Barton is the birthplace of John Cunningham Saunders, an eminent eye surgeon and founder of the Royal London Hospital, born in 1773.
