Description
Northam is a house built in the late 18th century, said to be from 1789. It is rendered over slatestone rubble and features a dry slate roof that is hipped at the front block, along with brick stacks. The main block has a double-depth plan and is three stories tall, with wide bracketed eaves on the front and sides. The corners are defined by pilasters, and there is a plat band between the ground and first floors. The symmetrical front has five windows, all with louvred shutters: 6/6-pane sashes on the ground and first floors, and 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor. A semi-circular arched doorway with a fanlight is set within a fine Doric porch, which has been glazed in the 20th century. At the rear are flanking service wings to the east and west; the west wing is set back and attached to the rear corners of the front block, featuring glazing bar sashes and a coved cornice beneath a tall castellated parapet. This house is a complete example of an architecturally distinguished late 18th-century residence.
