Description
Oldridge Chapel is a Chapel of Ease to St Thomas church in Exeter, built in 1844, although it may incorporate some masonry from the late 18th century. The structure is made of snecked volcanic trap with Bathstone dressings and features a slate roof. It consists of a nave, chancel, and south transept, showcasing a modest Gothic revival style. The medieval church was largely rebuilt in 1789, and some of the north wall masonry may date from that time. The 1844 construction was largely initiated by the Reverend John Medley of St Thomas, a founding member of the Diocesan Architectural Society, known for his progressive views on church architecture.
The chapel has a three-light Perpendicular east window, along with a west window and a transept window. The chancel includes single lancets on the north and south sides, and there is a bell turret on the west gable. Inside, the nave features a collar rafter roof with curved principals, and some of the principal rafters and purlins appear to be reused. The chancel has an arch-braced roof supported by stone corbels. A late 12th-century font with a square bowl is mounted on an 1843 stem with four shafts. The transept contains two hatchments on painted wooden boards, a 17th-century chest, and a 17th-century chair in the chancel. The stone pulpit dates from 1844, and the choir furnishings include poppy-headed choir stalls, likely from 1843 but possibly with later frontals. The bench ends in the nave display various tracery motifs that are notably advanced for the year 1844. This attractive chapel is impressively situated on a hill, isolated from other buildings except for the adjacent house.
