Description

Chestnut Cottage is a house, likely dating from the 18th century. It was originally two cottages, facing south-east. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob or rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and a thatched roof covered in wheat reed. It appears to have begun as a single-room cottage on the south-west side, with a two-room cottage to the north-east. Internal cob divisions and stacks project from each end. The front has a regular appearance with five windows. There are doors with 20th-century gabled porches to the right and left of the central window; the left door has been moved from the left end of the building. The first-floor window on the far left is an original 18th-century hardwood mullioned window with a flat face, a central iron casement, and fixed leaded side lights, with eight panes each. The two windows on the far right are pairs of timber casements with eight panes per casement, while the remaining windows are 20th-century timber casements, some with two and others with three lights. The roof is gabled on the left and hipped on the right. The interior retains plain carpentry details.
