Description

Bell House is a house dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, which was remodelled in the early 19th century. The house has solid, roughcast walls and a slated roof with clay ridge tiles, hipped at the left-hand end. A small rendered chimneystack sits in the left-hand gable wall, and near the right-hand end of the roof is a late 16th or 17th century granite ashlar stack with a tapered top. The position of the stack suggests a possible original plan of three rooms and a cross passage, with the hall stack backing onto the passage. The lower end of the building (now No. 52) was rebuilt as a separate house. The front of the house has two storeys and a three-window facade. At the right-hand end of the ground storey is an early 19th century glazed door with 12 panes in the upper part, set within a late 16th or early 17th century wood door frame that is ovolo-moulded with a cranked head and urn-stops. To the left of the doorway on the ground storey is a three-light wood casement window with two panes per light. At the left-hand end is a large fixed sash window containing 15 panes. On the second storey, the two left-hand windows are six-paned wood sashes. The right-hand window is a small two-light wood casement containing two panes. The left-hand gable wall, which is now the entrance front, is two windows wide. The right-hand doorway has four panels, with the two lower panels flush and a moulded brass knocker. To the left of the doorway is a single-storeyed canted bay window with a slated pent roof. On the second storey above the bay window are two wooden six-paned sash windows. The garden path outside this front has an old cobbled surface. The interior has not been inspected.
