Description

Rose Cottage, part of the Front House Guest House, is a self-catering apartment complex with origins in the 16th or 17th century, substantially enlarged and rebuilt in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone, largely covered with roughcast on the street side and partially at the rear. It has tarred, slated roofs. The original part of the cottage, on the left-hand side, displays a gable facing the street, featuring a projecting granite ashlar chimneystack with a chamfered plinth, offsets, and a tapered cap. Two 19th-century brick chimneystacks are located at the rear. The building has an L-shaped plan; the section along the street and the rear section of the original gable-ended range are likely later additions.

The street frontage has no openings apart from a small four-pane wood window situated in the upper storey of the right-hand section, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. At the rear, the west wall of the original gable-ended range has been re-windowed and probably re-faced in the 19th century with windows featuring red brick jambs and segmental arches, and three-pane wood casements. Inside, the ground-floor fireplace within the north gable has granite jambs and a substantial granite lintel that is cracked in the centre.

The archway, positioned on the street frontage between Rose Cottage and the guest house, is elliptical, constructed of red-brick headers with surrounding rubble stone and topped with a concrete coping. It is roughcast on the street side and dates to the 19th century.
